Android is Now the Most Used Operating System on the Web

The most popular operating system in the world of smartphones today was not just an idea or a simple project that was born overnight. It lived through multiple stages until the first Android has seen the light of the day.

The Android logo first came out in 2005 and was named Andy, in honor of its creator, Andy Rubin. It is believed to be inspired by R2D2 of the Star Wars saga, but there are also other hypotheses that may point to a novel by Philip K. Dick titled Do you dream about Androids with electronic sheep? The second option seems more appropriate for the OS name and has been known to be a favorite among the geek crowd for a while.

Android vs iOS (market share)

Within just a few years, the smartphone market boomed across the globe and two important players soon headed the game. The smartphone operating system market is still mostly dominated by these two players – Android and iOS. It seems like the battle of the titans and the world is watching. These two hold a combined whopping 99% of the entire market.

While Apple threatened to take and keep the lead for a while, today the majority of the market, over 86% in fact, is held by Android, although Apple sells at a higher average price. iOS remains a contender, with growth in markets such as Australia, France, Japan and USD, but losing market share in China and Germany, dropping by over 5% and over 3% respectively.

Android growth

Whichever angle Android’s growth is analyzed from, the results and statistics are strong and further growth imminent. One way to see the growth of Android is through the amount of new activations there are in the market of phones and tablets with this operating system. With more than 1.5 million average daily Android activations, and rising, at the date it was estimated that the growth of activations was around 5% on a weekly basis.

It’s understandable with these numbers why mobile phone software developers are fundamentally devoted to focusing on and propping up their Android apps. If betting among operating systems, the winner is, clearly and hands down, none other than Android. The inspired little green robot continues to see growth in markets that are just now emerging as playgrounds for the mobile industry and there’s no reason to expect the OS to have any less success in these fledgling markets.
